And the basics of the process are still the same: pigment is transferred through a screen to create vibrant, repeatable designs.

Screenprints look totally different than digital prints... they pop off the page - literally - because the dense inks sit on the surface of the print. This trait also allows for light-on-dark and metallic ink printing, resulting in rich, eye catching images that get attention. With the rise of DTG printing (Direct-to-Garment / aka "Direct-to-Garbage" as a friend who works in the Big-Print industry calls it) the quality of screenprinting stands out now more than ever.

What's Risography?

The first RISO duplicator was built in Japan in the 1980's as an eco-friendly, low-cost alternative to other printers. It utilizes vibrantly colored rice bran inks that have a similar aesthetic to screenprints.

RISO is commonly described as a digital screenprinter and is often used in conjunction with that process: for example, screenprinting the cover of a booklet and RISO printing the interior pages.

It's also great for mass producing posters, zines and printed matter when you want an aesthetic that will grab attention. The machines are loved by artists for their rapid printing and distinctive color properties.
